Sashi Mylvaganam was first elected to Surrey Heath Borough Council in May 2019, representing the ward of Frimley Green.
Sashi first arrived in the United Kingdom as a student refugee over fifty years ago, going on to qualify as a chartered accountant where he spent more than thirty years as a Finance and Operational Director.
After stepping away from the daily grind, Sashi chose to give back to the local community here in Surrey Heath, which has been his and his family's home for almost forty years, by serving in local politics and becoming a Borough Councillor in 2019. At the time, Sashi stood for the Liberal Democrats, which in part was influenced by Brexit.
Shortly after becoming elected, Sashi became the Leader of the Surrey Heath Liberal Democrat Party, a position he held until he was forced out of post in 2023 by a group that had radically transformed from the one that he had first joined.
When Sashi was Leader of the Lib Dems, he strived to work towards a balanced Council, putting the needs of residents first in collaboration with the previous Council Leader, Cllr Alan McClafferty.
With a change in administration at Surrey Heath Borough Council, this saw a drastic change in approach to cross-party working, decreasing the size of committees to avoid scrutiny, and the new Leader of the Council deliberately misleading local residents by stating the Council was on the brink of bankruptcy, in complete contradiction to the actual published accounts.
Sashi therefore took the difficult decision to cross the floor and joined Surrey Heath Conservatives in September 2024.
