Last Wednesday, Michael met three amazing students from West End’s Holy Trinity Church of England Primary School for The Big Plastic Count’s Youth Empowerment Day in Parliament.
Commenting, Michael said:
“It was wonderful to hear how enthusiastic the students are about reducing plastic waste and we spoke about a Global Plastics Treaty.
"I too am passionate about protecting and enhancing our environment, and I am proud of the action I took during my time as Environment Secretary to deliver a 25-Year Environment Plan and to ban plastic straws, drink stirrers, and plastic-stemmed cotton buds.
"I am also delighted that restrictions on a range of single-use plastics, including plastic plates, trays, bowls, cutlery, balloon sticks and certain types of polystyrene cups and food containers have now come into force. This new ban is the next step in cracking down on harmful plastic waste.
"Global action is needed, and I welcome that the United Nations Environment Assembly Resolution has set an ambitious timetable for the agreement of a new international, legally binding plastics treaty by the end of 2024.
"I know that my colleagues in Government are committed to securing an agreement on the text by the end of the year and are working closely with other parties and stakeholders to facilitate progress.”
