Surrey has some of the busiest roads in the country with 8.4 billion vehicle miles in 2023, making it the fourth busiest network in the United Kingdom.
Three of the UK's five busiest road sections are in the county, with Junction 12 to 13 having over 191,000 vehicles users per day in 2022. The M25 has 80% of the busiest parts of the UK's road network. As many residents know from personal experience, road works or an accident on the M25 can see drivers take diversions through Surrey's roads which detrimentally increases traffic locally.
The high volume of traffic has a significant impact on the state of the roads managed by Surrey County Council highways, who are responsible for some 3,000 miles across the county.

"Now of course we know there are issues with our highways, and it was really great to see the County Council release record levels of funding to deal with some of the issues on our roads, particularly on potholes.
"But one of the main issues impacting Surrey Heath is the A322 and the M3 junction, which is snarled up often even outside of rush hour. Now I know our MP, Michael Gove, has worked hard with Highways England to get some data to support upgrading this junction, to make it easier for residents to move around our Borough, our constituency, and also around the country.
"We need to keep up the pressure on Highways England, and as your Member of Parliament, that's exactly what I plan to do."
