20mph limits can’t be a vexatious subject.
Surrey County Council is in the process of looking at policy development in this area and at recent Select Committee I attended, evidence was taken from a series of witnesses including the Deputy Chief Constable, Highways Officers and the “20 is plenty” organisation.
A great deal of care will be taken in developing this policy and evidence to date indicates that it will not be a one size fits all solution.
The reduction in injuries from accidents at slower speeds is one of the prime drivers and an interesting fact is that injuries to school children occur on the journey to schools as well as outside them.
Also of interest is the positive response to surveys featuring 20mph limits and these indicate about 75% of the residents are in favour. This mirrors experience locally when a survey was carried out earlier this year.
