Natural England have launched a public consultation on proposals to expand the Surrey Hills Area of Natural Beauty (AONB).
The current boundary for the Surrey Hills has not been reviewed since its original designation back in 1958, despite repeated calls by local councillors, Members of Parliament and campaigners to reconsider the boundary. Following a series of landscape evaluation studies and a formal request by the Surrey Hills AONB Board, Natural England has now started the AONB boundary review process with a public consultation running from 7th March to 13th June 2023.
The extension areas proposed were identified through technical assessments by Natural England, following public engagements and investigations to include landscapes that meet the statutory requirements for inclusion within the Surrey Hills AONB. Local authorities, including Guildford Borough Council, are also being consulted on these proposals.
Analysis will be undertaken by Natural England of the consultation responses, and the proposals will then be reviewed in line with the proposed boundaries taking into consideration any further relevant evidence needed. If no fundamental objections are raised, and assuming the boundaries do not need to be amended, Natural England will move onto the next stage of the consultation. This will involve submitting an Order to the Secretary of State for confirmation, who has the discretion to call a Public Inquiry, before deciding whether or not to confirm the Order.
If you wish to submit a comment on these proposals, you can do so here.
