Today marks 32 years since Ukraine became an independent nation, and 18 months since Russia's illegal invasion of the country.
Since the outbreak of the war, the United Kingdom has stood by the brave men and women of Ukraine fighting for their nation's freedom.
The British Government has been Ukraine's main ally in Europe, in terms of military equipment, and over 134,000 Ukrainian citizens have been welcomed into our country, with special programs to help support them.
To mark Ukrainian independence, and the UK's continued support to the nation, both country's flags have been flown outside the headquarters of Surrey County Council.
Commenting, Leader of Surrey County Council, Cllr Tim Oliver, stated:
“Today marks Ukraine Independence Day – a chance for us all to commemorate the country’s Declaration of Independence on 24 August 1991 – a declaration that is no doubt as important today, as it was all those years ago.
“As the war in Ukraine continues, this Independence Day also marks 18 months since Russia invaded the sovereign nation. Countries all over the world have stood by Ukraine in its darkest hour and we will continue to do so.
“We also recognise the Surrey residents who have opened their homes to Ukrainian nationals as part of the ongoing, successful Homes for Ukraine scheme. To date 1,857 residents have volunteered to house Ukrainian families, and though this number continues to grow, there are still families who need help, homes, and support through the scheme.
“Countless Ukrainian people have lost their lives, families, friends and loved ones to this despicable war that continues to impact Ukrainians on a global scale. If you or someone you know could open your home to a Ukrainian family this Ukraine Independence Day, please visit our website or get in touch with your local district or borough council to offer your support.
“We continue to stand with Ukraine.”
