Proposals are in place to radically change Fairoaks from an airport and an important asset to the area, into a garden village of 1,000 homes.
Private developers under the name Fairoaks Garden Village Limited (FVGL), submitted its original planning application to both Runnymede and Surrey Heath Borough Councils in July 2018 to redevelop the airport into a garden village with over 1,000 new homes.
FGVL state that 45% of these new homes would be affordable, and that over 1,200 new jobs would be created as part of their proposals to create a 'business hub' on the site.
Last week, FGVL held a public exhibition inviting residents to see the proposals with local councillors and Michael Gove MP attending.
Michael commented:
“I visited the public exhibition to take a closer look at the proposals, and I remain deeply concerned about these plans, and do not believe that they are the right future for Fairoaks.”
Alex Hanney, Parish Councillor Chobham, added:
"We all know that traffic can often build-up in the area, and the scale of this proposed development with the number of new homes and additional traffic this will generate, is not suitable for our area.
"Significant improvements to the local infrastructure, particularly Chertsey Road, the A320 and Junction 11 of the M25, would be required before such a development could even be considered, and I was not convinced by the developer that they have fully factored the level of investment required; which would likely have a direct knock-on-effect on the number of affordable homes they are proposing to deliver.
"Fairoaks continues to be an important hub for aviation in Surrey and the South East, and like many in the village, I want to see it remain this way."
Following Michael's visit to the public exhibition, he wrote to Surrey Heath Borough Council to express his wish for the character of the area to be preserved, and for Fairoaks Airport to continue in its current form.
