Surrey has been ranked third out of twenty nine authorities for recycling, with over half of all the waste generated across the county is recycled, 54.4%, with almost 90% of this staying in the UK to be treated.
The Recycling in Surrey 2021/22 report has been published by the Surrey Environment Partnership (SEP), and shows that out of the 11 boroughs and districts in the county, we're the third best here in Surrey Heath for recycling, with 59.2% of waste generated in our Borough recycled.
With 89.7% of recycling and rubbish of the county's recycling staying in the UK to be treated or recycled, this means that fewer resources are used and less emissions created from transporting these materials. Of all the material collected from residents in 2021/22, 43% of it was put into rubbish bins with 27.9% used to create electricity through incineration.
The electricity generated was then sold on to the National Grid, with the income generated used to help run Surrey's waste service. The remaining material that couldn't be recycled, 15.1% of total waste, was sent to landfill.
Commenting, SEP Chair, Cllr. Marisa Heath, said:
"Recycling is a great way for residents to do something simple to help fight climate change, as the more material that is recycled the fewer resources are used to create new products.
"The short report is transparent about the recycling and rubbish produced in the county and what we did with it in 2021-22. And it shows some great results! I’d like to thank Surrey residents for their help and hope that this report encourages more recycling to help fight climate change."
