Following discussions between Thames Water, the Environment Agency and Surrey Heath's MP Michael Gove, unambiguous commitments have been to ensure that the recent odour problems from Camberley Sewage Treatment Works will never happen again.
In addition, Thames Water have acknowledged the mistakes made and apologised for their failures. With this apology, Thames Water have stated they will be compensating the local community in recognition of the impact caused by odour.
Commenting, Michael said:
"Several months ago, residents here in Moorlands Place told me about the big stink that was being caused by the Sewage Treatment Works here in Camberley. People had got used to some odours but odours have become frankly unbearable as a result of Thames Water taking sewage from elsewhere in their system to here in Camberley.
"But we took action. I made it clear to Thames Water that we needed a big clean, a clean-up fast.
"That action has actually resulted in making sure that all of the sewage, all of the material causing that odour has now been cleared away.
"More, we've got a commitment from Thames Water now that this will never happen again. I've secured from them, and from the Environment Agency, the regulator, unambiguous commitments to ensure that we never have anything like happening in the future.
"Thames Water know that they've made a mistake, and they've apologised. I've been seeing them today to discuss an acknowledgement - compensation - for people here in St. Michael's and also in Watchetts.
"I'll be going back to Thames Water in the weeks ahead in order to make sure that they make good on that promise. I'm grateful to them for having indicated that they will, and I'll keep you up to date."
