The Surrey Heath Youth Council (SHYC) has been relaunched following a new partnership with children and young people's charity Learning Space.
SHYC offers the potential for over 12,000 local young people to engage with Surrey Heath Borough Council (SHBC), and provides a direct voice for them into the Council to have a say in shaping priorities and policies that will impact on their future lives.
The Youth Council had been paused in the summer last year, when the previous provider was unable to continue facilitating the scheme. With the new partnership with Learning Space, and £14,000 funding from the Government's UK Shared Prosperity Fund, SHYC will be able to run for January to December 2024.
SHYC is comprised of twelve active young members, and they have already held their first in person and online meetings, with a focus on recruiting others to get involved in running the Youth Council, and deciding the focus of the work programme. A recruitment drive for young people aged 11+ is set to be launched in the coming weeks.
Learning Space Manager Gill North said:
“We are really excited to be part of the relaunch of Surrey Heath Youth Council. It is crucial that we listen to the voices of young people because they bring fresh perspectives, innovative ideas and invaluable insights that can shape a better future for all.”
