Cllr Alan McClafferty, the Leader of Surrey Heath Borough Council, marked Ukrainian Independence Day by raising the Ukrainian flag outside Surrey Heath House this morning.
Alan was helped by Surrey Heath Mayor Cllr. Helen Whitcroft in the ceremony alongside Ukrainian children who have been welcomed with their families into Surrey Heath through the Homes for Ukraine scheme.
The Mayor and the Leader of SHBC gave speeches at the event, along with Max Rafa, one of our Ukrainian guests who has been living in Surrey Heath for several months after leaving his war-torn homeland.
The lawn at Surrey Heath House was decorated with sunflowers, the national flower of Ukraine, and a symbol of hope for the future. Many of the sunflower decorations had been handmade at the weekly social hubs in Camberley and Chobham, which the Council run with partners to support our Ukrainian guests and sponsors. Traditional Ukrainian food was brought by guests to share with everyone after the flag raising.
