After nearly two decades of serving the residents of the Surrey Heath Parliamentary constituency as our Member of Parliament, Michael Gove has made the decision to stand down and not seek re-election.
As outlined in internal communications to Surrey Heath Conservative Association members, we are obviously disappointed that one of British politics most influential and recognised politicians will be seeking pastures new, however, are immensely grateful for his dedication and diligence, and express our deepest thanks for his hard-work in serving our constituency for almost twenty years.
Speaking on the announcement, Cllr Paul Deach said:
"Michael has undoubtedly been a polarising figure in UK politics. However, having known him since shortly after his election as MP in 2005, I have come to hold him in the highest regard. My judgments are based on personal interactions, and I have found Michael to be an effective and dedicated constituency MP, as well as one of the most courteous and affable individuals I have ever encountered.
"Over the past two decades, I have collaborated closely with Michael on numerous local initiatives, witnessing firsthand the positive impact he has had on many lives. Despite some harsh and unfair criticisms from local political adversaries ( I note they have wasted no time with some rather unedifying comments on social media following this announcement), I maintain that Michael has been an exemplary MP for Surrey Heath, consistently working hard for the wellbeing of his constituents.
"Nationally, Michael's contributions have been significant, underscored by his enduring presence in the Cabinet under every Conservative Prime Minister since his tenure began, making him one of the most notable parliamentarians of our time. The media coverage he is getting tonight only underscores this.
"The personal sacrifices required by public office are substantial, and Michael's are no exception. After 20 years at the forefront of British politics, I believe his decision to step back is not driven by election political pressures but rather a personal desire for change—a well-earned rest and a new direction in life.
"Though he may be leaving front-line politics, I am confident this will not be the last we hear of Michael Gove. I eagerly anticipate his next endeavours.
"I want to take this opportunity to publicly express my gratitude to Michael for his service to our constituency and our nation. I also extend my best wishes to him and his family for the future."
Details of the next steps in selecting our new candidate will be communicated to Association members by our Chairman Stuart Black in the coming days.
