For the past two months, residents in the west of Camberley have been experiencing foul odours emanating from the Camberley Sewage Treatment Works, owned and managed by Thames Water.
Michael Gove MP and Surrey Heath Conservatives have been campaigning to resolve this issue, and a virtual meeting was held with officials from Thames Water to discuss the problem and what action is being taken to fix this issue for local residents.
Commenting, Michael said:
"Earlier this afternoon, I held a virtual meeting with representatives from Thames Water to discuss what is being done to tackle the ongoing odour emanating from Camberley Sewage Treatment Works. I know how much this issue is impacting the lives of so many who live nearby the site, and I was pleased that Thames Water recognised that it had not provided an adequate service, had communicated poorly, and had let local residents down.
"It was informative to hear more about the works and the events that led to the importation of extra sewage sludge, resulting in the increased odour, and I was grateful for the opportunity to continue to push Thames Water for a speedy resolution to the issue.
"I pressed Thames Water to ensure that the right measures are in place to mitigate against this situation ever happening again, and raised the prospect of compensation for the community in light of the terrible circumstances that they have had to endure.
"I am due to visit the site next week and will continue to hold Thames Water to account on behalf of residents, and I will be sure to share an update following my visit."
