The Pride flag was raised outside Surrey Heath House by the Mayor of Surrey Heath, Cllr Sarah Jane Croke.
The Mayor was joined by guests including the Leader of Surrey Heath Borough Council, Cllr Alan McClafferty, SHBC Portfolio Holder for Support and Safeguarding Cllr Shaun Garrett, SHBC councillors, SHBC Chief Executive Damian Roberts, SHBC staff, and members of the local community.
The event was held to celebrate the diverse community within Surrey Heath and individuality across the Borough by showing support for those in the LGBTQ+ community. It follows the recent ‘Pride on the Road’ events across Surrey, which was organised by Surrey County Council in partnership with Pride in Surrey.
The Mayor, Cllr Sarah Jane Croke said:
"We have all had a tough 18 months, and now more than ever we need to look forward to a future where assumptions, bigotry and discrimination are a thing of the past, and we as a society feel safe and happy to be who we want to be and love who we want to love.
"This year we have been gifted from Pride in Surrey the progressive Pride Flag, which recognises intersections within the LGBTQ+ community, honouring LGBTQ+ people of colour as well as different gender identities.
"It is all part of a drive to be more inclusive of the expansive breadth of identity within the community."
