This evening in Normandy, Surrey, a commemorative event took place to mark the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings culminating in the lighting of a beacon, to remember those that gave the ultimate sacrifice.
The D-Day landings saw 156,000 Allied troops land on the coast of northern France on 6th June 1944 during the Second World War, marking the start of the campaign to liberate German Nazi-occupied Europe.
The beacon in Normandy was lit at 21:15 as part of a national chain of beacons lit across the country and along the northern coast of France.
Commenting, Ed said:
"Finished off 6th June 2024 with an excellent event organised in, the aptly named, Normandy this evening at Manor Fruit Farm. Thanks to Cllr David Bilbe for the invitation.
"Thanks to the marvellous Cllr Paul Chillman and his team for organising some great music from Surrey Police Band under the stewardship of WO2 Graham Atterbury, and a fabulous piper!
"It ended with a poignant beacon lighting ceremony at which I was humbled to lay a wreath in remembrance of those who fought and died for our freedoms on D-Day 80."
