As Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II celebrates her historic Platinum Jubilee, the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS) has unveiled a new statue of the Queen.
The life-size bronze sculpture, by equine artist Caroline Wallace, depicts the Queen in the 1980s riding one of her best known and most loved horses, Burmese. The Queen was presented Burmese by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in 1969. The horse went on to have a starring role in Trooping the Colour for 18 years running, ridden by Her Majesty during the parade from 1969 to 1986.
The Queen has always had an affinity for horses, having learnt to ride aged just three. When Burmese retired, the Queen opted not to replace the horse with a new mount, instead choosing to ride in a carriage during Trooping the Colour from 1987 onwards.
