In March 2023, Surrey County Council shared plans for the first phase of planned improvement works in Tongham.
These plans, if they go ahead, will change the layout of local roads and introduce a series of road safety improvement measures, including raised tables along The Street, improvements to the uncontrolled pedestrian crossing point north of the Manor House flats and a footway parking ban.
Included within the plans are changes to Oxenden Road, which would add a speed cushion and introduce road narrowing points.
The update shared in March also included information on proposed works to reduce vehicle speeds on Poyle Road – due to some changes to the plans for Poyle Road, it is now intended that these works will be delivered alongside the second phase of improvements in Tongham. This phase of the scheme is being designed in line with feedback received from engagement with residents last year and we will share plans at a later stage once they have been developed.
Phase one: delivering road safety improvements on The Street, Oxenden Road and Poyle Road
Improvements include:
- Introduction of a series of raised tables and pedestrian crossing point on The Street
- A speed cushion and kerb buildout on Oxenden Road
- Following feedback received in the earlier engagement, the scheme proposes to ban pavement parking along The Street to ensure pavements remain clear for pedestrians, making them safer and easier to use.
These changes will be monitored for a period of up to six months by Highway teams, and if appropriate, a 20 mph zone will be introduced for the village.
Residents can comment on the proposed pavement parking ban via the Surrey Says survey.
