The way roadside verges are cut in Surrey Heath is set to change next month, with responsibility for the maintenance of these areas returning to Surrey County Council from Surrey Heath Borough Council.
As part of this handover, the frequency of cuts will also change, with some areas being maintained less so as to encourage wildflowering, which is beneficial for local wildlife, insects and biodiversity.
Commenting, Cllr Paul Deach said:
"I shot this video along the A30 and the Maultway a while ago and thought it was perfect for this post.
"I recommend you watch with the sound on. With 41% of insect species in decline and only 3% of wild grassland remaining in the UK, we want to protect Surrey's future.
"From 1 April 2023, Surrey County Council will take over responsibility for Surrey’s 3,000 miles of highways verges from district and borough councils. In some areas, grass will be cut less to benefit insects, encourage wildflowering and more carbon absorption.
"We’re also supporting the national Blue Campaign at bluecampaignhub.com, which encourages councils and residents across the UK to find land suitable to let nature take over and grow wildflowers."
